Tech Radar: The 2018 Winter Olympics

For many years, the Olympics have a venue to showcase brand new and exciting technology and the 2018 WInter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea are no different. From robotics to virtual reality, there has been a multitude of tech-based headlines coming from the games which started on February 9.
Virtual Reality
Intel has pledged more than 50 hours of live VR programming making these winter games the largest-scale virtual reality event to date. 30 total events will be shot on multiple 180-degree cameras. This, combined with  Intel’s  broadcast partnership with NBC ensures a totally new Olympic experience. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said at CES 2018, “Intel is integrating innovative technology to ensure fans don’t just witness the moment, they experience it.”  A mix of live stream and on-demand content is available in the U.S. through the NBC Sports VR app.
Drones
Perhaps one of the most reported technology headlines in PyeongChang is the use of drones. The opening ceremonies featured a record-breaking amount of drones flying together; a whopping fleet of 1,218 lightweight, LED fitted drones created by Intel that produce a light show that can only be described as a performance. Watch the drones in action:

There are also security drones that will inspect ground and air activity in the area, monitoring with HD and thermal imaging cameras, as well as some with radar technology to watch for unidentified aerial vehicles.
Streaming/Broadcast
Coverage of Olympic events will be provided to the U.S. by NBC in 4K HDR quality, allowing for a significantly expanded range of colors and contrast seen by viewers. Viewers can also access Olympic events by watching on the NBC Sports app, or by streaming them on platforms that include NBC in their subscriptions.
Uniforms
Team USA’s uniforms feature a heating component that will help to keep athletes warm in the cold climate of PyeongChang. You can read about how the heated uniform works here.  There are also two Dutch speed skaters that are going to be donning the Samsung SmartSuit which calculates different factors that can help increase speeds to win gold. Watch this video to see the SmartSuit in use:

Robots
Robots can be seen around the Olympics providing a wide range of services from cleaning to translating. In fact, we’ve seen robots skiing, passing the Olympic torch and serving drinks. See how innovations in robotics are moving forward at the games here.

Tech Gifts for Holidays 2017

The holidays are fast approaching, and with Black Friday less than two weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about the gifts you may need for your family and friends. If someone you know is into all of the newest technology, these gifts might be just what they’re hoping for!
If you drive a car without an infotainment center, the Garmin Speak is one way to upgrade your vehicle without having to buy a new car. This mountable device with Amazon Alexa voice assistant allows you to control smart devices in your home, ask for directions, and stream music all hands-free. The only thing to consider is that the device runs off of a data connection from a smartphone, so strong network coverage is key to using it to its full potential.
Water-resistant, super light and thin, Amazon’s new Oasis eReader is a giant step up from previous models the company has released. The Kindle Oasis is available in 8GB and 32GB builds.
This new iteration of the GoPro Hero series comes on the heels of a rather rough year for the action camera company, but this camera is nothing short of exciting, especially for those looking to capture super high quality and high-resolution video. The hero 6 Black can shoot in 4K, has digital motion stability and is just as tough as it’s predecessors. Just make sure your recipient has the proper capabilities for 4K playback.
The selfie lover will take their pictures to a new level with this tiny camera drone. DJI’s drones are known for their quality, and the Spark is no different. With all the features a novice drone user could want in a small and easily portable design. Perhaps the most exciting feature for selfie queens (and kings) is the gesture control option.
For those who haven’t gotten into the hype of the Amazon Echo and Google Home movement, the Echo Spot operates as a high tech alarm clock that does more than just wake you up. Plan the entire day with an alarm clock that can also tell and show you the weather, read the news, set timers and more.
Though the reviews are mixed about the newest Xbox game console, there is no denying that the powerful console is impressive, especially for those looking to show off 4K picture quality and high-definition visuals.
The hefty price tag on the new iPhone makes it a controversial choice, but with the reviews that are starting come out, with some calling the iPhone X the best smartphone on the market.  The highly upgraded phone is just the beginning of Apple making high powered and exciting changes to their product lineup making the iPhone X one of the most sought-after tech gifts of the year.
If the iPhone X isn’t in the budget but taking high-quality smartphone photos is a priority for someone on your gift list, a smartphone camera lens kit can upgrade their photos in a flash. From fisheye to macro and wide angle, you can use interchangeable lenses to go beyond the normal smartphone photos. There are many options for these kits available online, so you can look and find the one that will suit your needs.

The eSports Revolution

eSports are taking the world by storm, and it’s great for gamers, fans and marketers. But what are eSports and why do we need to be paying attention to the growth of this emerging market?
What are eSports?
eSports refers to competitive videogame play. There are tournaments, live streams, big name players with sponsorships, teams and crowds of fans. Everything you would expect from a “real” or “normal” sport, with major differences in not only just activity level, but the fact that multiple games are played during the tournament. For instance: you don’t see a baseball game being played at the World Cup, but you may see players on League of Legends and on Call of Duty during the same eSports tournament.
The growth of eSports
Compared to most major sports, eSports are still in their infancy; but the rate of growth is so rapid that eSports will likely be able to catch up to major league basketball, baseball and football within the next few years. A big issue that eSports faces is making sure that the audience has a full understanding of what is happening on the screen. The changes of individual games and tactics is much faster than changing of decades, sometimes centuries old rules of other sports.
But this isn’t dissuading colleges and universities from moving into the future; in fact, the University of Utah recently announced that the school will sponsor a varsity eSports program, complete with scholarships. And the University of California, Irvine, opened an “eSports arena” that includes gaming computers and webcasting services.
eSports are currently poised to become a hugely influential financial market as well, in 2016, Goldman Sachs valued them at $500 million, growing into a $1 billion industry over the next 3 years. Even eSports platforms are benefitting. Twitch, an eSports streaming community was purchased by Amazon in 2014 for $970 million, and top gamers earning over $300,000 last year.
Marketing and eSports
Twitch streams were watched by over 2 million people in 2015, and the number has continued to grow, which makes this huge audience very appealing to marketers. However, marketing in this space is different than many other markets. Gamers want to see brands that do work to “benefit the space and not just the brand”, says Nathan Lindberg of Twitch. Brands that are loyal will receive loyalty in return. The majority of eSports advertising will also need to be digitally focused, as eSports haven’t majorly broken into TV yet. Marketing that feels natural and organic will do the best. See what eSports sponsor Coca-Cola has done for some excellent examples.
Get Involved With eSports
Want to see the eSports phenomenon for yourself? Check out Twitch, YouTube, and the all new FantasEsports to stream or play in a tournament.

How Successful People Spend Their Weekends

For many, weekends are reserved for lounging, Netflix, video games, and binge eating. But for the successful few, the weekend is an optimal time to maximize gains for the upcoming week. Not to say weekends should be work-filled, in fact, it’s important to disconnect and refresh every week, or, face burning out. It’s about using your time wisely. Truly successful people find smart ways to make the most out of those couple days out of the office. Here are a few of my favorite weekend practices:
  1. Make Time for Friends and Family
If friends and family aren’t at the top of your list, you’re doing it wrong. You don’t want to wind up rich, but alone like Michael Newman in the critically acclaimed 2006 comedy, Click, by the inimitable Frank Coraci.
  1. Exercise
Staying fit is crucial to your health and overall performance. Even sneaking in a 15-minute jog or two is enough to get the heart racing. Though junk food may be tempting, reach for a carrot every once in a while to keep that cholesterol down.
  1. Pursue a Passion or Hobby
Replace Netflix with some sort of fun learning activity; take guitar or piano lessons, an art class, write a haiku, or start a bottle cap collection—anything that keeps your mind and body active.
  1. Disconnect
Plan a trip into the mountain or take the kids to the beach. Just make sure you leave your phone behind. It’s important to connect with something other than the Internet.
  1. Volunteer
There is nothing more rewarding then helping others. It will not only do others good, but it will boost your spirits knowing you’ve made a difference.
  1. Avoid Chores
Chores equate work and that’s about the last thing you need in your time of relaxation. Unless it’s absolutely immediate, it can wait until Monday when you’re back in the grindstone.
  1. Socialize
Connect with friends. But, talk about things besides work, otherwise it might feel like you are working. Enjoy a sports game, play chess in the park, watch a play, or throw a b-b-q; there are a number of ways you can spend quality time with friends.
  1. Network
Wherever you are, there is always opportunity to strike a deal or meet a new client. Always keep a few business cards handy, just in case.
  1. Meditate
Close your mind off to daily activities and open up to a world of true rest and relaxation. If only for a few minutes during the weekend, practice meditating. You can do this by joining a yoga or meditation class or simply unwind at home (preferably in a quiet room where you can’t be easily disturbed).
  1. Recharge
Plug yourself into the aforementioned steps and reinvigorate yourself. Go back to the office feeling both strong in mind and body. You’ll find that ideas will come easier and your overall energy lasting longer.

Incorporate these simple things successful people do over the weekend and you’ll find that taking care of you, essentially helps take care of your business. If you’re struggling to come up with activities to do by yourself or with friends and family, below are some of my all time favorite places to visit in Minneapolis:
  • The Minneapolis Insitute of Art
  • Target Field
  • The Guthrie Theater
  • Minnehaha Park
  • Lake Harriet
  • Mill City Museum
  • Lake of the Isles
  • American Swedish Institute
  • Minneapolis Skyway System
  • The Museum of Russian Art
  • Anthony Falls
  • The Weisman Art Museum
  • Loring Park
  • Walker Art Center
  • The Mall of America
As you can see, there are almost never-ending things to see and do. Where are some of the ways you spend your weekend?

Mobile Marketing Trends Not to Be Overlooked

Research shows that we use our smartphones 84 times each day, averaging 5 hours overall. That’s way more than you thought, huh? Well, it’s no secret how reliant we have become on our phones, which means mobile marketing is even more critical for brands than ever.
Ignoring certain trends that have sprung up over the last decade would put a serious hindrance on marketing results. Here are a few trends that every business should become familiar with and consider implementing before we hit 2017.
For the first time, Google has begun to include mobile apps in their first search page results. Where you would usually see ads, you can now find app recommendations right on top. If you are promoting an app of any sort, you should probably up your SEO game on those marketplaces. SEO, of all the trends, is definitely going to make the most impact.
Even if you don’t have an app, yet, it might be worth investing—considering apps make up a huge change of mobile usage these days.

Instagram Ads

Users on Instagram are more likely to engage with brand posts then any other social media platform. Just like on Facebook and Twitter, you can target your demographic according to location, interest, age, behavior, etc., but the promoted post looks very similar to organic content on a user’s feed. There is also a 30 second video option with files sizes up to 30MB.
The introduction of the carousel ads have helped advertisers showcase more products or lifestyle images. Similar to Multi-Product Ads on Facebook, users can swipe to see additional images within one post. This is especially useful to photo-based brands who want to show a variety of their work in a short time frame.

SnapChat and WhatsApp

These days, most people under 35 no longer use Facebook or Twitter. The reason for this is that SnapChat and WhatsApp offers a certain amount of intimacy between contacts. Users can share as many shocking or hilarious photos as they want, without having to worry about their entire family watching.
The social pressures of having to get likes on an Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram post is relieved because “snaps” can’t receive likes. It’s a chance to take your brand out of the office and show these curious consumers who you really are! Taco Bell has certainly jumped on the SnapChat train.

Multi-device Mobile Marketing

According to Forbes.com, consumers “often move from one screen to another while shopping.” About 65% of users start on a smartphone, 25% on a PC/Laptop, and 11% start on a tablet. And they all end up on another device at one time or another.
For this reason, there are several different devices you should be taking into consideration, including smartwatches and tablets. Times are changing and your marketing efforts need to reflect that.

Video Ads

Depending on where you are marketing, you may want to consider video advertising. YouTube is especially reliant on this form of advertising, so if you’re big on the Tube or any other video-based social platform, videos ads are great option.

Ecommerce and Social Combination

We are seeing a big socialization of online consumerism with “buy now” buttons featured on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Not only can you use these social platforms for direct sales and lead building, but you can make your own site more social.

New Payment Systems

Recently, Samsung’s “Samsung Pay” is a payment platform that can be used nearly everywhere. Services like PayPal and Apple Pay are also widely accessible on several different devices. They are secure, safe, and super fast!

Customized Lifestyle Apps

In today’s technology run world, apps are no longer accessories; they are lifestyles. People use apps on their smartphones to reflect and enhance the way they live. Need help getting in shape? FitBit or MyFitnessPal are great choices that offer freemium options. Need to manage your finances a better? Try Mint or Mintbills.
By creating a lifestyle-based app of your own, you can promote your products and services in a modern way. There are many businesses that offer app building services, but only one you can trust: Appmart.

Social Gaming: Marketable and Fun!

Since 2011, the social gaming industry has risen in revenue by more than $1 billion. And just last year, the market hit $5 billion and is expected to exceed $2 billion by the end of 2016. So, who is playing? Over 155 million Americans play video games on a regular basis (3 or more hours a week). The split amongst men (52%) and women (48%) is almost equal, both averaging 13 years as a gamer. Although the average age of a gamer is 39, the industry spans across a wide-range of ages of demographics. With those odds, you’re probably a gamer yourself.
For that reason, social gaming is a serious resource for advertisers and marketers. So, how can your business capitalize on such a rapidly growing industry?

There are several ways to make money with social network gaming. One model is to offer two levels of the game, one as a paid premium version and the other a free, stripped down one. You can also charge items in the “free” game, such as tools or weapons. In Facebook (which boasts a steady 250 million daily user count), players can use PayPal or FB credits—making purchases entirely seamless. In Gamesmart, the new state-of-the-art gaming portal, users exchange SmartCoins: an open source P2P (Peer to Peer) cryptocurrency that operates with no central authority or banks. Payments can be sent instantly to anyone, anywhere in the world. SmartCoins will continue to evolve for the ever changing needs of a smarter world. Here are a few reasons why SmartCoins are the future of social gaming:
Fast Transactions:
Even faster than Bitcoin, SmartCoin’s blazing speed 30 second confirmations will get your payments sent or received anywhere in the world without waiting around. SmartCoin works globally and constantly, which means coins can be sent from everywhere to everywhere at any point in time.
Security:
With built-in SHA-256 wallet encryption, you can safely store your SmartCoins on your hardware, or even print out your own paper wallet. Transactions can be viewed in a public database, so there is no uncertainty about the status of payment transfers, and this database exists on all clients that use the software.
Growing Community:
SmartCoin has a growing and friendly community in which everyone can participate and contribute to improve and distribute SmartCoin.

Another way is to display advertisements intermittently during a game. This is what marketers call, “gamification.” It doesn’t charge the player at all, and if designed right, the ads can be both unobtrusive and profitable. It’s best to tie in services and products that relate to the game somehow. For example, a fitness brand can use the game to promote healthy recipes or protein shakes that the player could find useful.
Another way is to develop your very own successful gaming portal, such as Gamesmart.  Gamesmart offers ready-to-play games in an variety of different languages, such as Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and English and genres, such as Action, Family, Kids, Match, Puzzle, Shooter, and Sports. Fans of popular mobile and web-based games like Candy Crush and Clash of Clans will love Gamesmart’s improved games titled Yum Yum Jelly Smash, Subway Clash 3D, Berry Blast, Froggy, and Deadshot Dynamite.
At Gamesmart, users enter a world for the creative, the strategic, and the bold. Unlike other gaming platforms, when users play Gamesmart, they can earn iRewards, which are redeemable for Amazon, gift cards. Gaming has never been more rewarding! Gamesmart, it’s a game changer.

Why You Should be Building Your Own B2B Marketing App

If you didn’t know, Kylie Jenner created an app. It’s called, of course, Kylie Jenner and offers it’s users indispensible updates on the 18-year-old’s “lyfe”, looks, and music choices. Created by Whalerock Digital Media, the app also fashions a live feed, giveaways, and an interactive offline experience. Oh, and according to Apptopia, it reached 1.75 million downloads during the first week of it’s availability, bringing in over $134,000 dollars.
Not convinced your business needs a mobile app, yet? Well, let’s give mobile apps some more context, shall we? According to Juniper Research, by 2020 there will be over 38.5 billion mobile device users on the planet. Still not convinced? If you’re a business owner here’s a list of why you should consider getting a mobile app for your business:
Mobile apps help build a direct marketing channel
At the touch of a button, your customers can receive important updates and promotions from your company. These push notifications can include price changes, general news, coupons, latest products, new services and so on. This allows you to have a direct dialogue with your customer without having to wait for them to come to you for questions.
Mobile apps provide faster solutions
Time plays an important role when it comes to preserving and building website visitors. Most mobile apps can be accessed without the use of the Internet, allowing customer’s access to your company any time of the day. The faster and easier it is for customers to reach you, the better your ROI will be.
Superior user engagement
According to Techcrunch.com, smartphone users spend nearly 84% of their time on apps. Instead of navigating a web browser, users are attracted to the simplicity of the all-in-one business application. Not only are mobile apps readily accessible on anyone’s smartphone home screen, but push notifications allow your business to build substantial brand loyalty.
Mobile transactions
Largely due to the rise of Google Wallet and Apple Pay (simple one-click purchases), customers are able to easily purchase products and services using a business app. Impulse buys have thus rocketed, leading to much higher conversion rates on apps then on websites.
Social media integration
According to Techcrunch.com, users spend nearly half an hour a day (14%) on social media outlets using mobile apps. For that reason integrating social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook (1.25 billion mobile monthly active users), or Pinterest is crucial in sustaining a loyal standing with your customers. Most customers, 66% to be more accurate, will check out a product or service on social media before committing to a purchase, which says a lot about buyer behavior these days.
Receive real customer feedback
A mobile app enables customers the ability to comment, like, or share your products and services. In turn, you will receive insights into your audience’s behavior and thus understand how to target future customers and preserve existing ones. This can be done in a variety of other ways, too, such as an in-app survey, review section, and so on.

It’s safe to say the benefits of developing and maintaining a mobile app in this day and age, is indispensible. Perhaps its not the right move for every business, but for the vast majority, the opportunities are endless. There are thousands of mobile app developers, so, which one is right for your company? A Cost-Effective Guide on How to Rank in Google Apps

So, you developed an app. Consequently, you’ll want it to rank well with Google. You may be thinking it’ll cost you an arm and a leg, not to mention thousands of dollars. Fortunately, it is possible to rank well without going broke. Here’s how:
For starters, keep your eye on the prize. It’s important to understand the value of being ranked in the top 10. It’s estimated that in order to do so, your app must be downloaded at least 15,000 times and installed up to 25,000 times a day to make it even close to the top. Seems daunting? Luckily, with the use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, marketing your app is much easier. Try exposing your app via social media outlets (paying smaller amounts for ad space) and watch you app gain traffic over time.
Respect the launch window. New apps tend to rank easier because users are always searching to try new things. This gives you a window to capture their attention. Try allowing users to test a demo of your app during this time.
Keep a close watch on user reviews. Although user reviews do not affect the backend of the ranking system, they do figure into whether or not new users will want to download your app. Make an effort to speak with your audience, answer their questions, and inform them on any changes. If the review is negative, be sure to address the issue in a respectful, attentive manner. The worst mistake you can make is ignoring a bad review. Do your best to resolve the matter, and show new and existing users that you are there to help them.
Make it freemium. People can use the app for free, but switch over to a premium option for even more features and items. Don’t make the mistake of putting a price on your app too early. Users tend not to invest in something they know nothing about.
Be mobile ready. Make certain your app is compatible with a variety of devices, such as an iPad, tablet, iPhone, Android, desktop, and laptop. By allowing users to access your app on multiple devices, you will increase your app’s install percentage.
Enhance your visibility by implementing effective search engine optimization techniques. Practice proper SEO techniques by using keywords and phrases that uniquely represent your app. When done correctly, people who search for those keywords can effectively appear in the top search results. SEO is an important department all on its own and can take some time and energy. Therefore tools such as Google Keyword Planner are a great help in choosing appropriate keywords.
In conclusion, reaching the top ranks in Google Apps takes a lot of time, energy, and some money, but the rewards are high if you keep at it. Finding a proper marketing solution is your first step. Create a product that speaks to an audience and use the guide provided!

Pokémon Go Etiquette: The Dos and Donts

The sudden phenomenon that is Pokémon Go has already been noted as the most successful mobile game ever to hit the U.S. Since its debut on July 6th, the game boasts 21 million daily active users and has topped over 15 million downloads. According to IOS usage data, users are spending 33% more time on PG than Facebook and 46% more than Snapchat.
The app, for the uninitiated, is a virtual scavenger hunt, allowing users to hunt and capture over 151 different characters (Pokémon) on their phone using augmented reality. In other words, players are able to explore the real world with their smart phones using GPS signal. For millennials and new generations alike, the game is a fun, interactive activity to the beloved 90s franchise. A chance to “be the best like no one ever was.”

Like its predecessors (Candy Crush, Game of War, Draw Something), Pokémon Go is highly addicting. Users are actually required to leave the comfort of their couches and venture out into the “unknown” that is their neighborhood in order to catch Pokémon. Players also have the ability to “battle” strangers in Pokégyms, collect prizes at various designated Poké stops (namely landmarks), and join together in teams. Mind blown? If you haven’t downloaded the app by now you probably will by the end of this post.
But however addicting the game can be, it’s important we remember our good manners and moral aptitude. For that reason, here is a list of Dos and Donts when playing Pokémon Go:
Do be a good sport. If you lose a battle, shake hands, not fists.
Do buy goods from businesses that are also Pokéstops or house wild Pokémon.
Don’t be intrusive with others. No one deserves bloodshed over a Pikachu.
Don’t play Pokémon Go in cemeteries, hospitals, memorials, synagogues, or churches, unless the Pokémon is extremely rare. Do be very quiet and respectable about it!
Do read the information provided at a Poké stop. You will learn new things about your surroundings.
Don’t run into the street and cause a traffic jam (or, worse, an accident).
Do only play Pokémon Go on your break at work. If you don’t have a job, how will you pay for all the data you’re using playing the game?
Don’t trespass!
Do explore your city. See where the game takes you and maybe even meet a few new friends.
Have you passed? Great! Now go out and catch ’em all!
